What is a Festival?

Festivals are events held to commemorate various aspects of culture or history. Festivities may be religious in nature such as Christmas or Rosh Hashanah; ethnic like Diwali; commemorations such as Eid-al-Fitr; commemorations commemorating significant historical events like Pharaonic victories or military successes in colonial wars; they can even include music and dance performances, food or drink vendors and art exhibits unique to certain areas. Festivitas comes from Latin festivits meaning feasts games or holidays and is related to both feast and fiesta in English usage.
Festivals have come to be widely recognized events in modern life. Festivals serve a wide variety of cultural and social purposes ranging from sanctioning tradition while also celebrating innovation; offering nostalgic revivals; to commemorating cutting edge avant garde fine art practices.
Festivals provide people with a way to commemorate specific parts of their culture and heritage while forging bonds between individuals. While in some instances festivals serve to attract tourist dollars – for example Toronto’s two-week festival called Luminato was originally designed as both an incentive for residents to participate in new traditions while simultaneously promoting festival tourism (Citation2020).
Festivals should remain cultural events to provide cultural enrichment to local communities; any transition into tourism-focused festivals is unwelcome as its economic benefits often only last short-term and depend heavily on tourism revenue; moreover, such events tend to alter how local communities perceive festivals.
Many early festival rituals were connected with religion, honoring or thanking gods, goddesses and saints by honoring or thanking their godly patronage – known as patronal festivals. Others related to seasonal changes or historical events; for instance, harvest festivals. Yet others marked historic victories over rival kingdoms or nation building activities by ancient Egyptian kings over Libyans or nation building initiatives.
Festivals typically focus on one central topic or subject matter, which can range from religious or ethnic issues to shared interests such as music genre, film genre or a book genre. Festivals also often serve to promote cities or brands within them – for instance the Edinburgh International Festival is an annual contemporary arts festival held in Scotland while Cannes Film Festival in France holds film-oriented festivals each year.
